Teams have submitted two new proposals for changing overtime to the league for discussion.

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/33517464/nfl-teams-submit-two-separate-proposals-adjust-over

First off, let's understand two things:

1. The NFL's unspoken Big Problem with overtime is how it affects TV schedules, and therefore the Big Media money on which the NFL depends.

2. No matter how it's determined, whoever gets the ball first in overtime has an inherent advantage. Because even in a "both teams get a possession" scenario, if the first team scores, then the other team is under huge pressure. It's "unfair" but it's unavoidable, so no point trying to sugar coat it.

With those things in mind, personally, I say fuck possessions, fuck time, and get rid of ties. Toss the damn coin, whoever wins gets the ball at their own 25 like a touchback, and play normal football with the clock off until somebody scores. Football is a brutal sport, and there's no reason the overtime rules should be any different. If you don't want to lose in overtime, then win the damn game in four quarters like you should have. YMMV.

I’m fine with the rules the way they are.  Tired of teams crying about losing the coin toss.  Prevent them from scoring a TD and you have a chance.  I don’t like ties though.  Change it back to 15 mins.

I actually think they should eliminate all overtimes during the regular season. You play four quarters and tie, so what, you earn a tie. I like how ties impact the standings. As for the playoffs, one possession for each team or a ten minute period where possessions don't matter and it's just the score at the end of that period that determines the winner seem like more fair options.

@admin teams playing for a tie at the end of the 4th quarter seems a bit well, anticlimactic to viewers and people that paid hundreds of dollars to go to the game, don’t you think?

I like the idea of the coin toss winner deciding where the ball is placed on the field. The other team gets to decide if they are on offense or defense.

Nope. They got to see them live to fight another day and find out they didn't have what it takes to beat the other team. I like it.

Apparently the NFL acknowledges the need to examine the rules and there is some momentum for change, but it would take 75% of the teams to buy in and those votes aren't there yet.

I like the rule change.  Hoping they extend it to the regular season eventually.
